It's not easy to find books from small, independent bookstores in NYC. Passionate about books and the threat of closing independent bookstores, we set to create an app that would help city dwellers find the books they need easily on the shelves of independent bookstores in our neighborhoods. Ben Purkert, Javier Lopez, Eric Weinstein, and I created CityShelf and we were off to a fast start. We spent nights and weekends ideating, designing and building a product for book lovers everywhere to access books they were interested in. We launched the CityShelf beta web app to 100+ people at NYU. The next year was dedicated to building a native app as well as expanding to six more cities. With lots of interest in our work from bookstores near and far, we have open sourced the code for others to continue to build experiences for indie bookstores.
